What is Anaemia?

Anaemia is a condition that is a result of not having enough red blood cells or haemoglobin to meet the needs of your body. Red blood cells use haemoglobin to carry oxygen around your body in your blood. Anaemia will cause the tissues and organs around your body to not get the required amount of oxygen. As a result, this can leave you with symptoms such as feeling tired, weak or shortness of breath. There are many reasons why someone may develop anaemia, identifying the problem means you can get the treatment required.

What causes Anaemia?

There are many ways and reasons why someone can develop anaemia. We have broken down the three Most common causes of development below:

  • When your body isn’t making the required amount of healthy red blood cells it needs. This can be due to not getting enough iron, vitamin B12 or folate in your diet. Some people can have problems with absorbing these nutrients.
  • When your red blood cells are being broke down too quickly by your body, this is known as haemolytic anaemia.
  • When you’ve suffered a significant loss in blood. This can be either a sudden blood loss due to a trauma, or a gradual blood loss over a long period of time.

Symptoms of Anaemia

There are a number of symptoms that can appear in people with anaemia. However, if your anaemia has developed slowly over time it may not show symptoms. The symptoms you may have include:

  • Looking Pale
  • Feeling Tired and Weak
  • Feeling Dizzy
  • Shortness of Breath
  • A Thumping or Unusual beating of your Heart

How to get more Iron, Vitamin B12 or Folate in your diet.

Below lists foods that are good sources of iron, folate and vitamin B12 which can help to prevent you becoming anaemic.

Iron

  • Red meats including beef and lamb.
  • Dark green vegetables including spinach, watercress and kale.
  • Dried fruits such as apricots, prunes and raisins.
  • Iron-fortified bread.

Folate

  • Poultry, pork and shellfish.
  • Chickpeas and peas.
  • Brown rice.
  • Green vegetables including spinach, kale and broccoli.
  • Fortified foods, such as cereals.

Vitamin B12

  • Red meats including beef and lamb.
  • Eggs.
  • Milk and other dairy products.
  • Fortified soy, bread and cereal products.
  • Salmon and cod.
