Digestive Problems?

Learn what’s going on in your body so nothing holds you back, today we are talking about Digestive disease.

Bloating, acid reflux and heartburn are all signs of Digestive Health problems. Yes, you might put them down to over-indulging at the start of your summer holidays but if they’re happening often you should get it checked out to ensure its not more serious.

According to the NHS, around 40% of people have at least one digestive symptom at any one time. Most are down to what we’ve eaten, and our lifestyles. Therefore, discovering what’s going on and making simple changes can have a big impact.

The Randox Health Digestive Health Programme assesses the health of your stomach and bowel. It includes tests to help determine the risk of certain conditions such as stomach ulcers, coeliac disease or gastritis. It will also identify if there is any trace of blood or calprotectin (a marker of inflammation) in stool samples.

Left untreated, digestive problems can have long-lasting implications and it’s advised that if you’ve been taking over-the-counter treatments for two weeks without resolution, you should seek advice. The good news is – if there are a few things that aren’t quite right – you can make a change.

Coeliac Disease

Some of us simply can’t process gluten – but not everyone knows that’s what is causing our bloating, headaches, discomfort or tiredness.

It is a genetic, autoimmune digestive disorder thought to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide. When someone with coeliac disease accidentally eats food containing gluten, it triggers an immune response. This causes the lining of the small intestine to become inflamed and damaged.

This is painful and makes it difficult for the body to absorb nutrients and vitamins from the food. As a result, those with the disease are advised to avoid all gluten completely. If not treated, it can lead to other serious health problems such as osteoporosis, bowel cancer, and can cause infertility.

With Randox Health’s specialised Coeliac Autoimmune Disease test, you can find out whether you’re likely to be gluten-intolerant or have coeliac disease.

The Coeliac Disease test is included in our Everyman, Everywoman and Signature programmes, and within our Digestive Health Programme. Finding out you are gluten-intolerant can be easily managed, with a wide variety of non-gluten alternatives.
