Testing for COVID-19: successful detection despite virus mutations
New variants of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) have been identified recently in the UK, South Africa and Brazil. These variants contain multiple mutations in the virus’ genome (its DNA).
The emergence of these virus variants has left some people wondering if previously developed diagnostic tests can still successfully detect the presence of COVID-19.
Detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus using Randox’s COVID-19 test is not affected by the identified mutations.
Our test, which utilises PCR technology, is a fast and highly sensitive diagnostic containing the necessary components to provide detection of two independent genes – to reduce the impact on testing of genetic variation in the SARS-CoV-2 genome.
This test is used across all our COVID-19 testing services including fit to fly, test to release, and workplace testing, on samples obtained from our home sample collection kit, or appointments at Randox Health Clinics, Travel Centres (UK and Ireland) and Mobile Laboratories (at Heathrow and Liverpool Airports).
The Randox PCR test is also used within the UK Government’s National COVID-19 Testing Programme, for which our testing capacity is in excess of 100,000 tests per day. On 23rd January 2021 we surpassed 9 million tests within the UK National Testing Programme.
Randox continues to monitor variants of SARS-CoV-2 and performs regular analysis of this biological information. Randox confirms that the performance of our COVID-19 PCR test is not impacted by virus mutations.
Our COVID-19 PCR test facilitates prompt diagnosis of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, the identification of infection clusters and the isolation of individuals who require quarantine and/or medical intervention.
For those who need to take essential trips, our COVID-19 testing can facilitate safe travel for passengers and staff, and provide an increased level of confidence for those travelling when current lockdown restrictions ease.
