Cancer Research UK finds more than 2,500 cancer cases a week are preventable

More than 2500 cancer cases a week could be prevented if people in the UK changed their lifestyle habits, according to a new report from Cancer Research UK.

The figures show that almost four in ten cancer cases could be prevented if British people drank less alcohol, kept their weight down, and ditched cigarettes:  tobacco smoke alone accounts for over 15% of cancer cases.

The team say that while cancer survival is improving, the rate of new cancer cases in the UK has risen by 7% over the past decade. Taking into account the continued growth of our ageing population, the rate of new cancers is expected to continue to increase by about 2% every year.

Prevention, more than ever, is key to improving the health of the nation.

Dr Peter FitzGerald, Managing Director of Randox Health, commented;

“What people may be shocked to hear is that a preventive health approach to your health could give you back 23 years of your life. That’s on average what we lose when we don’t take care of our health.

 “Simple changes may be all that is necessary to improve your health – like quitting smoking or losing some weight. However other things – like the role our genetics play or visceral abdominal fat which can lead to diabetes – can only be discovered through a health check.”

Whilst the researchers from the Cancer Research report say that, positively, smoking rates in the UK are falling by about 1% a year, the team also highlighted that ‘a shift in public attitude’ was necessary.

Dr FitzGerald continued;

 “We know that people need to change the way they view and manage their health. Currently, we tend to simply wait until we get sick and then try to manage that sickness accordingly – typically with medication or if it is too late, surgery or other forms of intervention.

“Instead – it makes sense to assess the state of our health early, discover the conditions of which you are personally at risk, and work to keep you living well for longer.

“In life, there are eras of enlightenment and we believe this is one of them. By knowing that 40% of cancers are preventable through lifestyle changes, we hope that people will be empowered to take control of their health and make a change.”
